# Custom Campaigns

> Create a campaign with the member statuses you define, for any marketing effort you run.

A custom campaign is the general-purpose campaign type: you choose its member statuses and what they mean. Use one for a product launch, a field event, a content program, or anything else that isn't a [webinar](/product-docs/campaigns/webinars/overview).

## Creating a campaign

You can create a campaign from the sidebar or from within a [folder](/product-docs/folders/overview). When creating a campaign, you choose:

* **Name**, a descriptive name for the campaign.
* **Type**, the campaign type that defines the member statuses available. The type you choose determines how contacts progress through the campaign.
* **Salesforce sync**, optionally connecting the campaign to a Salesforce campaign. See [Salesforce Sync](/product-docs/campaigns/salesforce-sync) for the available options.

<Info>
  A campaign cannot be nested inside another campaign.
</Info>

## Member statuses

Unlike system campaign types such as webinars, a custom campaign's statuses are yours to define. They live on the **campaign type**, so every campaign of that type shares the same set.

Create and edit types in [Campaign Settings > Types](/product-docs/campaigns/settings/types), where you set the status names, their order, and which of them count as success statuses. See [Members](/product-docs/campaigns/members) for how statuses behave once contacts are on the campaign.

<Tip>
  Define your statuses in progression order when you create the type. Members move forward through the list in workflows, so the order determines what automation can do.
</Tip>

## Next steps

* [Members](/product-docs/campaigns/members) to add contacts and track their progression.
* [Assets](/product-docs/campaigns/assets) to build the emails, forms, and workflows for the campaign.
* [Tokens](/product-docs/campaigns/tokens) to set reusable values used across those assets.
* [Salesforce Sync](/product-docs/campaigns/salesforce-sync) to mirror the campaign to your CRM.
