# Update Topic Subscription

> Subscribe a contact to, or unsubscribe a contact from, specific marketing topics within a workflow.

The Update Topic Subscription node changes a contact's preference for one or more [marketing topics](/product-docs/workspace-settings/emails-and-domains/overview#subscriptions-and-topic-level-unsubscribes) as they pass through a workflow. It works like a topic-level unsubscribe from the preference center. It never changes the contact's overall [subscription status](/product-docs/emails/recipients#subscription-status).

## Configuration

1. Under **Update to**, choose **Subscribed** or **Unsubscribed**.
2. Under **Topics**, select one or more topics.

### Update to "Unsubscribed"

Unsubscribes the contact from the selected topics. Emails sent on those topics skip the contact with the reason **Recipient is unsubscribed from this topic**. The contact keeps receiving emails on every other topic.

**Common use cases:**

* Honoring a topic opt-out captured outside of Conversion, such as a form field or a CRM update
* Pausing a topic, such as product updates, for contacts in an active sales cycle

### Update to "Subscribed"

Clears an earlier unsubscribe from the selected topics, so emails on those topics reach the contact again. Only use this when the contact opted back in to those topics.

**Common use cases:**

* Re-subscribing a contact who opted back in to a topic through a form

<Note>
  Topic preferences only apply to contacts who are **Subscribed**. A contact who is unsubscribed, bounced, or has no subscription status still receives no marketing emails after this node subscribes them to a topic. To change that status, use [Update Subscription Status](/product-docs/workflows/nodes/update-subscription-status).
</Note>

## Behavior

* The node executes once per contact as they pass through.
* Selecting a topic the contact is already subscribed to, or already unsubscribed from, leaves it unchanged.
* The topic preference is updated before the contact advances to the next node.
* Unsubscribing fires the **Contact unsubscribes from topic** trigger. Subscribing fires the **Contact resubscribes to topic** trigger when the contact is **Subscribed**. These are the same triggers a change in the preference center fires.
* If a selected topic is deleted after the workflow is published, the node errors and the contact continues to the next node.
