To connect your Marketo instance to Conversion, you’ll create a dedicated API-only user and a LaunchPoint service. This generates the credentials Conversion needs to access Marketo. The process takes approximately 10 minutes and requires Marketo administrator access.

Step 1: Create an API role

The API role determines which actions Conversion can perform in Marketo.
  1. In Marketo, go to Admin → Users & Roles.
  2. Open the Roles tab.
  3. Click New Role.
  4. Enter a descriptive role name such as “Conversion API Role”.
  5. Select Access API.
  6. Click Create.

Step 2: Create an API-only user

This user represents the Conversion integration and should not be associated with an individual employee.
  1. Return to Admin → Users & Roles.
  2. Open the Users tab.
  3. Click Create API Only User. In some Marketo instances, this may appear as Invite New User.
  4. Enter identifying information for the integration. For example:
    • Email: conversion-api@yourcompany.com (The email address is used as an identifier and does not need to belong to a real person or active inbox.)
    • First Name: Conversion
    • Last Name: Integration
  5. Assign the Conversion API Role created in Step 1.
  6. Click Create API Only User or Send, depending on your Marketo interface.

Step 3: Create a LaunchPoint service

  1. Go to Admin → Integrations → LaunchPoint.
  2. Click New → New Service.
  3. Enter the following details:
    • Display Name: Conversion
    • Service: Custom
    • Description: Marketo integration for Conversion
    • API Only User: Select the Conversion API-only user created above
  4. Click Create.

Step 4: Retrieve the connection details

  1. In the LaunchPoint services list, find the service you created.
  2. Click View Details.
  3. Copy the Client ID and Client Secret.
  4. Share both values with your Conversion team.
