Mosaic settings control how contact activity becomes touchpoints and how touchpoints map to channels. Go to Settings → Mosaic, or click Settings on any Mosaic page. Settings apply to the whole workspace and to every Mosaic report, including past periods. Changes save as soon as you make them.

Set up Mosaic

Mosaic works with its default settings as soon as it’s enabled. Setup reviews those defaults so the reports match how your team measures marketing.

Before you begin

  • Mosaic is enabled for your workspace.
  • Salesforce is connected and syncing opportunities, with Amount, Close Date, and the won flag populated.
  • Opportunities are linked to companies, and contacts are linked to the same companies. If you plan to use opportunity contact roles instead, they’re syncing from Salesforce.
  • The tracking script is installed on your website, if you want web sessions to count.
  • Your ad accounts are connected with tracking on, if you want ad clicks credited to the right platform.
  • Your campaign types have success statuses set, if you want campaign members to count.

Defaults Mosaic sets for you

Steps

  1. Go to Settings → Mosaic.
  2. On the General tab, set the attribution window to match your typical sales cycle.
  3. Choose your eligible contacts.
  4. Choose your default model.
  5. On the Channels tab, rename, add, or remove channels to match how your team reports.
  6. On the Touchpoints tab, turn on the system sources you want to count.
  7. Pick a channel for Marketing email link clicks and for each ad platform.
  8. Turn on each campaign type whose members should earn credit, and pick a channel for it.
  9. On the Web rules tab, add an exclusion rule for internal traffic, such as visits from your own domain or app.
  10. Add or edit channel rules for any UTM tags your team uses that the defaults don’t cover.
  11. Click Test and enter a few of your real landing page URLs to check which channel each one gets.
  12. Open Mosaic and check that Marketing coverage and Credit by channel look right.

General

Attribution window

How far back before a goal a touchpoint can earn credit, in days. Enter a whole number from 1 to 3,650 and press Enter. The default is 90 days. The window is counted back from each goal. For a 90-day window, an opportunity created on June 30 can be credited to touchpoints from April 1 onward. Set it to roughly your sales cycle: too short leaves out early touches, and too long credits activity that likely had no effect.

Eligible contacts

Whose touchpoints count toward an opportunity. Everyone at the account suits account-based marketing, where many people at a company research before a deal. The contact role options are stricter, and they depend on your sales team adding contact roles in Salesforce. An opportunity with no eligible contacts is always unattributed.

Default model

The attribution model Mosaic uses when a report doesn’t choose one. The default is Linear. Anyone can switch models for their own view with the model menu on a report, without changing this setting.

Channels

The Channels tab lists your channels and their subchannels. Every touchpoint lands in one channel and, optionally, one subchannel. You can’t delete a channel or subchannel while a web rule, campaign type, system source, or the referral fallback still points at it. Mosaic lists those references so you can retarget them first. Deleting can’t be undone. Direct is a built-in channel. You can’t rename, recolor, or delete it.

Default channels

Mosaic channels are separate from the traffic channels shown on contact page visits. Changing Mosaic channels doesn’t change those.

Touchpoints

The Touchpoints tab decides which activity becomes a touchpoint and which channel it lands in. See Touchpoints for how each kind is created.

System sources

Sources Conversion tracks automatically. An ad platform’s channel applies to:
  • Website sessions from ad clicks in a connected account with ad tracking. These skip your web rules.
  • Lead gen form submissions from a connected account.
Ad clicks without Conversion tracking parameters are still credited when they carry UTM tags. Your web rules assign them by those tags.

Campaign types

Campaign members become touchpoints when they first reach a success status. Each row is one campaign type, grouped into Field events, Webinars, Email blasts, and Custom.
  • Turn a type on to count its members’ successes. Webinar and field event types are on by default, including new ones you add later.
  • Pick the channel the type’s touchpoints land in.
  • Webinar types without a channel use the Webinar channel, shown as Webinar (default).
  • A type that’s on with no channel shows Choose a channel. Its touchpoints still earn credit, but reports show them under Unknown.
Click Manage types to edit your campaign types and their statuses.

Web rules

The Web rules tab controls website sessions. Use the Channels and Exclusions switch to move between channel rules and exclusion rules, and the search box to find a rule by name, condition, or channel.

Conditions

Both kinds of rule match a session on its first page view. A rule has one or more conditions, and a session matches only when it meets all of them. Each condition compares the field with one or more values: equals any of, doesn’t equal any of, contains any of, doesn’t contain any of, starts with any of, ends with any of, matches any of these patterns, is present, or is empty.
  • Matching ignores case.
  • In matches any of these patterns, * stands for any run of characters. For example, paid* matches paid, paid_social, and paidsearch.

Channel rules

Channel rules assign a channel to each website session.
  • Rules run from top to bottom. A session gets the channel of the first rule it fully matches.
  • Drag a rule by its number to change its position.
  • Click a rule to edit its name, conditions, or channel, then click Save changes.
  • Open a rule’s menu to turn it off or on, or delete it. A deleted rule’s sessions fall through to the next matching rule.
  • Click New to add a rule. Give it a name, a channel, and at least one condition, then click Create.
When no rule matches, Mosaic uses the fallback at the bottom of the list: Sessions from tracked ad clicks get their ad platform’s channel before any rule runs. The default rules check paid UTM tags first (a named network ahead of a generic paid medium), then other tagged mediums and sources, then known referrer hosts for search engines, social networks, and AI assistants.

Exclusion rules

Exclusion rules keep sessions like internal traffic from receiving credit. A session that matches any turned-on exclusion rule stays in the contact’s history but never becomes a touchpoint. Common exclusions:
  • Visits to your product or login pages, such as Hostname equals any of app.example.com.
  • Visits referred by your own tools, such as Referrer host ends with any of .zendesk.com.
  • Test traffic, such as UTM source equals any of test.
Exclusion rules apply only to web sessions, so you can’t add one while Web activity is off.

Test a visit

Click Test to check how Mosaic would classify a visit before you change rules.
  1. Click Test.
  2. Enter the landing page URL, including any UTM parameters.
  3. Enter the Referrer, if the visit came from another site.
Mosaic shows whether an exclusion rule removes the visit, and otherwise which channel rule matches and which channel and subchannel the visit gets.
